SOUND BITE Silas (Paul Wesley) didn't get why Elena liked Damon (Ian Somerhalder). "That's because you haven't had sex with me," Damon said.
At the campsite we learned Katherine's never shot a gun in her life. Matt went to chop some wood for the fire while Katherine lamented the fact that after all she survived, a sinus infection was what was going to defeat her. Jeremy wrapped her in a blanket. Sweet. She essentially killed him, remember. And she tried to do it a second time. I suppose we don't have to worry about people shipping those two, right? Because it would be too weird for Jeremy to want someone who looks like his sister.
Silas found Matt and told him he couldn't talk or scream. Only Matt could do both. He yelled for Jeremy to run. Silas wondered why he couldn't get inside Matt's head. He grabbed him and saw Nadia and her chanting male friend. "Why are you watching me, Traveler?" Silas said, along with something in a foreign tongue. Then, he snapped Matt's neck. Even though I knew he had his ring on, I still panicked thinking Matt was dead-dead when Katherine and Jeremy ran right by him as though he wasn't there and we saw Bonnie. The Gilbert ring brings him to the other side each time he dies. He returns to his body when he finds it. The catch: Every time he dies, he starts off farther away from his body. That's why it takes longer to return each time. (Smartly planned, writers). Matt asked why he could see Bonnie if he's on the other side...
Before we got an answer, we got to see Elena seriously dry hump Damon in her dorm room. She took off his shirt. Then she gave him some of the vervain-filled water. Do not burn that torso, Elena. She tied him to the chair, and Damon knew she was doing what Silas had told her to: She was to get Damon alone, weaken him, and kill him. She poured more vervain down his throat and he spit it out on her. It snapped her back to herself for a moment. Damon told her about Silas not being in the quarry, and she yelled at him to find out what happened to Stefan. Every time she looks at Damon, she wants to kill him, she said. She has to resist it, Damon told her. Anger is the trigger. She sat down in a chair and impaled her leg so she couldn't leave it.
While Jesse tried way too quickly to make a move on Caroline as she iced his face with a popsicle, she told him she's still with Tyler. He'd been screwed over, too, by his ex. You always find excuses for them, he said. (Julie Plec has said Tyler is definitely returning to the show. WHEN?)
Jeremy wanted to return for Matt, and Katherine told him she never looked back -- that's how you survive. "That's why people treat you like an object, not like a person," he said. Seriously, the writing this episode was great. Matt was still with Bonnie, who told him about her dad. He said he was so sorry for her death and her father's, and he hugged her. Like I said, I got a little teary because finally, she had someone to hold on to, if only for a moment. She broke down crying. Jeremy found Matt's body, and Silas was there. He figured out the ring must protect Matt since Jeremy wasn't mourning. Hunter's perk -- Silas can't get into his head. Well then, Silas said, Jeremy's of no use to him so he might as well kill him. Silas forgot one thing: He's slower than a vampire, and weaker than a vampire. "I, on the other hand," Jeremy said, "am a Hunter. Plus, I work out." Runner-up line of the night! Jeremy grabbed his little hatchet and lunged at Silas. They were equally matched, actually. There was some nice hand-to-hand. Silas used a headbutt. Jeremy used a kick. Jeremy had Silas where he wanted him until Silas remembered he's immortal. He shoved a tree limb through his own body -- and through Jeremy's as well. Ouch. Luckily, Katherine is a quick study and figured out how to work the shotgun. Silas was down, for now.
Elena got angry again after Damon told her about Bonnie's father being killed and admitting he hadn't thought to check on Bonnie. In his defense, he has been busy. She just kept getting angrier and angrier until she was about to go all pyro again and start a gas fire. Because she sucks at lighting matches, Damon had time to try to calm her down. To defeat Silas' mind control, she needed to feel something stronger than her desire to kill him. He asked her to tell him about those weird feelings she'd been having about Stefan being in danger. That couldn't have been easy for Damon. But it worked. She was feeling Stefan's intense pain. "We have to find him," she said calmly. "We will. I swear," he said. You felt how much they both care about Stefan in that moment. Caroline walked in and saw them both bound to chairs. They need to set ground rules for when boyfriends come to visit, Caroline said. Better than a Fifty Shades of Grey joke!
