FUNCTIONAL VAMPIRES Caroline (Candice Accola) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) are ready for college. And laundry day.
Stefan came to again, struggled, and passed back out. We found out he's been hallucinating conversations with Damon, who was telling him to turn off his humanity switch. It wouldn't get rid of the pain, but it'd rid him of the fear, misery, and hopelessness. But Stefan won't. If he gets out of this, he doesn't want to be a monster. Ah, Stefan. Still brooding and suffering.
While Megan was in the shower, Caroline immediately broke the privacy rule by snooping through her things. Elena said they need friends to be considered functional but Caroline is worried she'll get a craving and want to eat Megan because their blood bags have gone bad since they can't keep them in the mini fridge. Caroline drank some of Megan's protein water out of protest and... vervain! Caroline wanted to lock Megan up, wait for the vervain to leave her system, and compel her, but Elena thinks the best way to make Megan think they're normal is to act normal. Which means party time. Caroline was frosty to Jesse when he said hello to her and Elena because why tempt fate when she's with Tyler. Slight problem: Elena and Caroline couldn't enter the house. A human must own it. They told Megan they were waiting for someone. Did she buy it?
It was Jeremy's turn to drown his sorrows in comfort food. Damon caught up to him at the Grill and said Jeremy was lucky he didn't put one of those boys in the ICU. Says the man who once KILLED him, Jeremy noted. "Yes, in the privacy of your own home, away from prying eyes..." Damon said. Turns out, Damon was able to compel the principal into giving Jeremy just a three-day suspension. So relax. We may see another Mystic Falls Decade Dance yet. As Damon left to wait for Jeremy outside, "Stefan" showed up. They awkwardly hugged it out. Meanwhile, Elena left a message for Megan to call her so she could explain why she and Caroline left the party. Again, Caroline wanted to grab Megan, but Elena said no, they'll just say Caroline wasn't feeling well. Megan phoned back and said she was being chased. She was begging for them to come help her. Caroline said to come outside and they could. I was thinking Megan might be trying to lure them somewhere or confirm they couldn't enter the house, but no, Megan's body was thrown outside from above. She was dead. There were blood on her neck. A vampire did it to her, Elena said.
Back at the Grill, Damon and "Stefan," who hadn't called Damon all summer, had a drink. Silas could read Damon's mind. He knew Katherine was at Salvatore Mansion. Is that who's chasing her? Jeremy felt a chill where his Hunter tattoo was when "Stefan" touched him, just like he had when Silas grabbed him right before killing him. Ghost Bonnie was there. She told Jeremy she'd bound the spell that took down Silas. -- when she died, he was freed. Jeremy couldn't tell Damon that Bonnie had died, so he played the "I'm a Hunter, our whole reason for existing is to kill Silas" card. Jeremy asked what Silas had wanted. It clicked -- Katherine. (Is it because she'd ingested the cure so he needs her blood?)
Katherine was in Damon's bathtub when Silas walked in. She thought he was Stefan. They flirted. Human looks good on her. Being Elena-less looks good on him. Just as they were about to kiss, he grabbed her neck. He could've just strangled her, but no. Time for a field trip, he said. Human or not, Katherine still has moves. She used the straight razor she'd been shaving her legs with to slash his cheek. Altogether now, NO, NOT THE FACE. While he healed, she grabbed a robe and ran downstairs. Damon was there. He told Jeremy to get Katherine out of there and not tell him where he's taking her. Silas came sauntering downstairs. I assumed it was because he was that much of a badass he didn't need to rush. But Damon theorized that vamp speed came with the upgrade. Fair enough. It levels the field ever so slightly. Silas said to get out of his way and give him Katherine. Damon told him to first drop the Stefan look. Silas just smiled. "What?"
On campus, Caroline wanted to bail the crime scene. She'd grabbed Megan's phone. Just then, the head of campus security approached her and Elena. She told them they'd found a suicide note. They were looking for Megan's phone. What does that mean? Is she lying like a Liz Forbes or Meredith Fell would (which is acceptable), or is she lying because she's part of something evil?
