FIK-SHUN DISCLAIMER The foxtrot is just a hobby.
Hayley and Paul -- contemporary by Dee Caspary
Music: "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by Sleeping At Last
"Uggggghhhh, my God, I'm so stressed out that people have to leeeeeave after tonight," complained Jesse. Preach! And also: Witch! How did he know? After rambling on for awhile, JTF backpedaled. "I'm gonna keep this Carly Rae Jepsen short: That was amazing." Nigel and Mary nearly fell out of their chairs in supportive laughter. Oh, the insanity of having her on, in a decision made by Nigel! How young and naive they all were back then! It's all too much!
The judges offered vague praise for both dancers here, then languished in an argument between Mary and Nigel about whether Paul looks more like a young Elvis (Nigel) or James Dean (Mary). I am surprised Jesse didn't chime in with an obligatory "Or Jason Priestley," à la Clueless. But I can't just project my thoughts onto Jesse Tyler Ferguson. That is no way to go through life.
I liked the section of the dance when Paul was doing the same wobbly-walk behind Hayley as if to reassure her, even out of sight, that he had her back. And I loved the shot of Hayley and Paul's moms huddled together. "It was amazing."
Amy and Fik-Shun -- hip hop by Dave Scott
Music: "Lemme See" by Usher feat. Rick Ross
It was an incredible repertoire for Amy tonight, said Nigel. "You don't have to put it in someone's face to be sexy...MILEY CYRUS." Subtle! Nigel's got it goin' on as always. "He went there!" shouted Cat with glee. "Controversial! Twitter is now a forest fire!" (It's really not, guys -- weren't even Miley's superfans all like "Boo. You whore." following Sunday's shenanigans?)
Jesse Tyler wore it better: "Your solo blew me away," he informed Fik-Shun. "It erased everything that happened with Miley twerking. I was cleansed! I now like twerking again."
He added, "Amy, you're small enough to go in my pocket and I love that."
I'm so glad these two reactivated their partnership from earlier this season -- it made me appreciate so much more...not only their talents, but the spirit of fun with which they infused season 10. When they're together, they're two All-Stars, no question. They belong together. They will probably win together.
Jasmine and Aaron -- jazz by Sean Cheesman
Music: "Mirror Mirror" by Lord KraVen
To be honest this was not my favorite dance from the former couple, but it was still a great showcase of their athleticism -- and a cool concept, what with the mirror and the reflection/hallucination and the angst, oh, Aaron's terrible tsunami of angst! When I look back on this dance it's like a giant smudge of glitter in my mind. I just thought it might have been lacking a narrative and was too focused on moments and visuals. I may need to watch this again. FINE...I've twisted my own arm. If the shoulder gets involved, I'm in real trouble.
Who were your favorites tonight? Is Jesse Tyler Ferguson the best guest judge? Do you understand now, about the tsunamis?
Discuss! See you next week.
