MACKENZIE HAS MAGIC FEET* *Not a terminal illness.
Two of the Top 18 must dance/hobble away; Paula Abdul and Erin Andrews guest-judge| Published Jul 10, 2013
Our disgust re: last week’s format was “noted”! This week, the judges announced the bottom six at the top of the show, but waited until everyone had danced -- still full of hope, wonder, and the Promise of a New Day -- to make the cuts. Jasmine Mason has been eliminated, while Jade Zuberi had to bow out due to injury. (Alexis Juliano and Jenna Johnson also had to dance for their lives, while bottom-three guys BluPrint and Curtis were automatically safe because Jade was already out.)
I’m shocked that it’s Jasmine leaving instead of Alexis or Jenna! I thought Jasmine could win. She’s so lithe and explosive and has this look about her that’s very “I’m a teenager and full of life,” but never came across as immature. Nigel and the producers seem to be using the choreographers’ comments as determining factors when deciding who to eliminate. Apparently the choreographers didn’t like having to give Alexis the same note over and over, and they thought Jasmine doubted herself too much. Awww. I never saw any doubt from her at all!
Gotta say I’m bummed about this one. I like 'em all, don't get me wrong -- but think Jasmine should've stayed. Isn't overcoming self-doubt and developing your mojo, like, the whole point of this show? I'd rather see a genuine improvement arc with further exploration into Jasmine's psyche than hear more secondhand gossip about how Alexis is forgetful and hard to coach. Seriously, what is that? How is the Alexis scenario better? I don't get it.
So Malece will be dancing with Alan now -- a good pairing, I suspect.
Amy and Fik-Shun -- Paso Doble by Jean-Marc Genereux
Music: "Tactical Dominance (Orch Hybrid Version)" by Jack Trammell
"NOBODY'S DYING IN THIS PASO WAR TONIGHT!" Hey, there's Mary, ready to rumble. This was a wickedly intense opener ("Don't try to sell me, like, a rainbow," warned Jean-Marc even though I'm guessing he might have bought one from them). I'm not sure it was the "dizziest paso I've ever seen," as promised, but it was good. It may have seemed even more passionate had it come later in the show. I don't know why that is. It just is!
Nigel advised Fik-Shun to relax his shoulders, guest judge Erin Andrews made things sporty-like right off the bat with an aggressive "You've got a bullseye on your back" comment, and it turns out Paula Abdul knows Fik-Shun because he appeared on her CBS series Live to Dance at 16 (watch videos of his routines over on PopWatch), as DuShant Stegall (his actual name). I am so friction' proud of you," she gushed. "You're happy all over your face." Oh it gets better. "I could smash you, squeeze you, do all that I do."
NEXT: Hi, I'm new. You're about to die, and you don't want to let her go. #Contemporary
