Kara: Chocolate with cayenne pepper
Jerrell was right in calling Kara's rail thin model a "pregnant cupcake" in this dress. Kara was almost uncomfortably passionate in describing her vision behind the dress — the "burst" of cayenne pepper after all that chocolate — but the design did not speak for itself. It reminded me of some of Sweet P's failed looks, only better. Isaac rightly noted that "any time the word 'pregnant' comes up, you know you've missed." Just ask Malvin, who made that infamous pregnant chicken dress, which I will never, ever forget. (I know that was for a maternity challenge, but still).
April: Blueberry - OUT
In some ways, this might have been April's best design yet — the color was beautiful, and the double-layering of the two shades of violet really worked, according to Isaac. But the execution was way off -- the hem of the skirt looked as though a dog had gotten to it. Diane kept talking about "Halloween," which I didn't get, although it would have been cool if April had gone all out toward the Violet Beauregard motif she'd mentioned earlier. However, that would have been too ambitious, and as Georgina suggested, this six-hour challenge didn't encourage ambition, which is unfortunate. It was definitely time for April to go, because she's been struggling from day one. I was a bit taken aback to be reminded that she's only 22 — I thought she was at least five years older than that — so she's probably still too green to be an All-Star.
What exactly is going on here? When All-Stars premiered three weeks ago, I was extremely enthusiastic about it. I loved the amazing looks from the first episode, but ever since then, it's been a struggle to make it through the whole hour. So many of these designers — Mondo, Rami, Austin Scarlett, even Kara — have so much more to offer, but I feel like the challenges are hampering instead of inspiring them. It's still early in the season, though, and next week looks promising. Are you loving the All-Star season, or does something have to change, and fast?
