Obviously, I've saved the best for last. Peggy tried marijuana for the first time and we all got a great contact high. Peggy, Smitty (who I now love!), and Kinsey were stuck dreaming up vacation scenarios for Bacardi. The boys wanted dope to get their wheels turning so Kinsey called up his squirrelly Princeton buddy to hook them up. Peggy's new motherly and devoted secretary, Olive, warned the girl against going into the boys' den. But in she marched with a tuna fish sandwich. She introduced herself and announced her intention to get high. It was great. When Kinsey tried to tell her she wouldn't like it she shut him down. ''How do you know what I'll like?'' she demanded. ''You never ask how I feel about anything except brassieres and body odor and makeup.''

Peggy felt it alright. ''I am hungry. It's just not worth moving,'' she told the boys, all of whom seemed suddenly dazzled by her. None more than dear Smitty, who realized that he was sweet on the girl. ''I went to the University of Michigan,'' he told her. Peggy looked over, her head a little heavy for her neck, a barrette askew, and said politely ''Really? I went to Miss Deaver's Secretarial School.'' I have a feeling I'll be watching these scenes over and over again for a very long time. We cut from their office party to Roger's gay affair and back to Kinsey on the floor grimly reciting TS Eliot's ''This is the way the world ends….'' Kinsey was still rocked from the missile crisis, Smitty wanted Peggy alone up on the roof, and Peggy wanted to work. She was inspired. She sent the boys packing and marched back to her office. Olive was not amused. She tried to tell Peggy that she was blowing her chance at a happy life, but our girl was not in a mood to be scolded. ''I have a job. I have my own office, with my name on the door. I have a secretary and that's you. And I am not scared of any of it.'' At this point in her speech, Peggy went a little off the rails but she was stoned and life is melodramatic and poor Olive was going to have quite a story for her husband when he got back from the dump.

What did you Mad people think? Was this your favorite episode so far of the season? What do you think about the lingering glances between Betty and the suave Henry? What was your take on Don and Betty's kiss out on the lawn? And what of Pete and Trudy's broad Charleston out on the dance floor? I thought it was fun to see these kids cut loose but also indicative of their privileged squareness. How do you think Joan felt when she went to bed after her dinner party?
